NBC "TODAY SHOW" TO FEATURE TOP COMMUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

NBC "TODAY SHOW" TO FEATURE TOP COMMUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE The NBC Today Show will feature a segment Friday morning, Oct. 7, on the 100 Best Communities for Young People. Scottsdale was named one of the communities in an announcement last week. The segment will air locally between 8:30 and 9 a.m. on Channel 12. The winning communities - ranging from small towns to urban neighborhoods across America - are being celebrated for their commitment to provide healthy, safe and caring environments for young people. "This award honors the most important work we do as a community," said Scottsdale Mayor Mary Manross. "Nothing says more about our quality of life and the character of our community than the way we nurture and teach our young people. This is a compliment to every Scottsdale organization involved in serving our youth. It's an honor for every parent, child and teacher in this city." Scottsdale is receiving the 100 Best honor, in part, because of its programs for children and young people. Outstanding programs highlighted in Scottsdale's application included: ** The LINKS Community Collaborative, a network of agencies that tracks key issues for youth; ** The Interfaith Network of Scottsdale, which promotes youth volunteerism, character building and leadership through different faiths; and ** The bilingual Ready to Learn program, promoting awareness of the impact of early brain development through literacy programs focusing on new parents. . The new system provides state-of-the-art call taking and dispatch capabilities, as well as improved reliability. Work is currently underway to add high-speed wireless connectivity to the patrol vehicles. Once the patrol vehicles are connected through the new high-speed wireless network, the system's Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) capabilities will be put to use. AVL allows the new CAD system to recommend the closest available patrol units to an incident location, and it provides patrol officers with routing information to an incident's location. AVL will also allow an officer to be located in an emergency situation. The new CAD system is the first of several new major applications being implemented in the Police Department. The next phases of the project include records management, field reporting, property management and field management. The new applications are scheduled for a spring 2006 launch.
